Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves House-Museum
The Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves House-Museum, located in the city of Lisbon, showcases the collection of physician Anastácio Gonçalves. It includes about 3.000 works of art organized in three large themes: 19th- and 20th-century Portuguese paintings, Chinese porcelain and Portuguese and foreign furniture. There are also important specimens of civil and religious gold and silverware, European paintings, Portuguese sculpture, European ceramics, textiles, coins, medals, glass. as well as Swiss and French pocket watches. Besides, the House-museum holds a significant collection of documentation, drawings, watercolours and small artefacts belonging to the painter Silva Porto.
The House-Museum Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves, built to the design of architect Norte Júnior in 1904-05, was commissioned by painter José Malhoa to be his house and studio. The capital’s first artist’s house, which was awarded the 1905 Valmor Prize in 1905, was included in the growth plan of the city of Lisbon.
The “Malhoa House” was purchased in 1932 by Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves (1889-1965), who lived and organised his collection there until the year of his death. In 1969, on the collector’s own wish, the building is bequeathed to the State so as to house a Museum that would open to the public in 1980. The building went through expansion and refurbishment in 1996, according to a project by architects Frederico and Pedro George. A contiguous detached house, also by Norte Júnior, was annexed to the original building so that the space for the reception desk, shop, cafeteria and temporary exhibitions was expanded. The House-Museum Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves reopened in December 1997 with its present-day layout.
