National Costume Museum

The National Costume Museum showcases a vast collection of historic clothing and accessories spanning from the 18th century to the present day. Its permanent collection is rotated so as to highlight exhibits from different periods, styles or trends. Collections in Detail is a line of temporary exhibitions shedding light on some exhibits or exploring particular themes. It is located at the Palace of Angeja-Palmela, in a former Lisbon recreation farm, and its garden - the Monteiro-Mor Botanical Park – has the same opening hours.

It was inaugurated in 1977 following the exhibition entitled The Civil Costume in Portugal, promoted by Natália Correia Guedes, who would become its first director.

It is made up of donations from private parties and also from costumes and accessories from other national museums. In subsequent years and until today private donors were mainly responsible for enriching the collection.

Angeja-Palmela Palace

This palace, which was named after the two families who owned it, was built to the orders of the 3rd Marquis of Angueja, who had planned to house its collection of natural history and a botanical garden in this space. The mansion was refurbished but the natural history museum failed to materialise; instead, there are still some architectural vestiges like the present-day restaurant and the green house.

The palace, including the garden and the recreation farm, were purchased by the State in 1975 to install the museum.

Botanical garden

The botanical garden, which once included an agricultural land, extends for over 11 hectares. It was presumably started by Domingos Vandelli in the second half of the 18th century, during the time of the 3rd Marquis of Angeja, and continued in the 19th century by the Palmela family.
