Interventions
Often fixed to the building, carved wood becomes an integral part of it, being also subject to decay. It has been one of the main artistic expressions of architectural decoration in Portugal from the Baroque period to the present day. It is almost entirely used for religious decoration, in altarpieces, retables, organs, pelmets, bas-reliefs, mouldings, torches, candlesticks, crosses, among other typologies.
Intervention methodologies, as for sculpture, are defined after studies of production techniques, decorative techniques, material identification, decay factors and environmental conditions. These are multidisciplinary works, usually carried out as a team, with special emphasis on church heritage, often detached from their original location, belonging to public but also private bodies
